Mismanagement of the Russian economy for years had plunged much of the population into dire economic straits. The Russian ruble was not worth a whole lot and many experts said that the outlook for long term Russian economic stability was bleak. But in the last 7 years Putin has managed to use Russia’s huge energy deposits to bring Russia back to financial stability and now the effects of that stability are being seen in Moscow. In Moscow the Ritz Carlton hotel chain has built an enormous $350 Million hotel that is referred to around the world as the Red Ritz. With rooms renting at as much as $1,000 per night, the Red Ritz is one of the most luxurious hotels in the Ritz chain and a shining example of the huge growth in the hotel business in Moscow. Built with the help of investors from Turkey, the Red Ritz attracts a very high end clientele and that clientele expects great service for the price they pay and they get it. That clientele also likes to spend money in Moscow and that makes the residents, and businesses, of Moscow very happy. To help fill in the need for mid-range priced hotel rooms large corporations such as Cendant have made a commitment to develop at least 45 new mid-range priced hotels in Moscow. Cendant owns such hotel brand names as Days Inn and Howard Johnson and they fully expect to reap the benefits of investing in growing hotel markets such as Moscow. The city of Moscow is the largest city in Europe at 11 million residents and it boasts tourist traffic of over 4 million tourists a year. With all of the recent success of the tourist trade the hotels in the city are being demolished and then new ones are being built at a frantic pace. Many people fear that Russia is losing some of its history by doing so much demolition and construction so fast. The fear is that the new Moscow skyline will not look anything like the skyline that has been part of Moscow for years. With progress comes change and right now there are plans to continue building huge luxury hotels around the area of the Kremlin. Moscow is growing and experiencing success on a grand scale. With that success comes the look of change. No one is sure when the construction will end but many Moscow officials are hoping that the end result will be a continuation of the hotel boom in Moscow.
